Mukaram Abubakhrieva

Mukaram Abubakhrieva is an Honored Worker of the Republic of Kazakhstan. She graduated from the A. Seleznev Almaty Choreographic School and the T. Zhurgenov Kazakh National Academy of Arts. She began her professional career as a ballet dancer at the Abai State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater.

Her first choreographic works were created during her time at the Abai Theater. As a choreographer, she has actively collaborated with the Kuzhamyarov Republican Uyghur Theater and the Astana Opera. With the Astana Ballet company, she staged a number of productions, including Zhusan, Carmen, The Language of Love, Salome, and several other notable works. She is also the author of various choreographic miniatures, such as Touch, Scythian Frescoes, Eclipse, Dreams of Kyz Zhibek, and others.

During the creative process, she is often inspired by sudden insights and moments of clarity, allowing her to enrich the dramaturgy and emotional palette of her characters with new movement and expression. However, drawing on her extensive experience, Mukaram has repeatedly observed the lasting value of first impressions: it is the initial sensations and emotions that often remain the truest and most enduring.

During the forced creative hiatus brought on by the pandemic, she successfully adapted several major premieres and productions for television, which became a powerful source of motivation for ballet artists.

She received the national Umai Award in 2022 in the category “Best Choreographer.” She is also a recipient of the Kurmet Order and a diploma laureate of the international Benois de la Danse Award (2025).
